US stocks closed negative but off lows; Gap reports sales rose 6% YoY
FXStreet (San Francisco) - Wall Street closed with small losses on Thursday as investors digested first bearish outlook expressed by Mario Draghi in his press conference; whereas, secondly, bet on when the ECB will begin its QE.
The shares opened the day lower after the ECB's decision, however, a Bloomberg report saying that the ECB is ready to begin its QE as early as January sent the Dow to record highs. Then, market entered into wait-and-see mode ahead of Non Farm payrolls report on Friday.
The Dow Jones declined 0.07% to finish the day at 17,900.10; the S&P 500 lost 0.12% to close at 2,071.92; whole the Nasdaq finished at 4,769.44 after falling 0.11% on the session.
Only Telecommunication (+0.41%), Utilities (+0.03%) an Technology (+0.02%) posted some gains on the day; while Energy (-0.86%), Materials (-0.34%) and Industrials (-0.32%) were top losers. Top movers in the day were $PTR (6.18%), $SNP (7.55%), $LFC (4.89%) and CHL (3.07%), all of it Chinese based companies. The Shanghai index rose 4.3% today; It's 19% over past month and +37% YTD amid opening stocks to foreign investors.
Top laggards were $TD (-5.11%), $SNY (-2.83%), $RDS.A (-1.69%) and $BABA (-1.33%). Small caps expressed in the Russell 2000 were down on the day as the index fell 0.51% to 1,173.01.
After hours, Finisar $FNSR reported a miss in revenue by $0.02 to a FQ2 EPS of $0.23; Smith & Wesson $SWHC beat by $0.02 to FQ2 EPS of $0.09. Gap $GPS reported that comparable sales rose 6% YoY in November to $1.72B amid Old Navy 18% increase comparable sales.
